What is Happening in FIRST GRADE?

Dash

First Grade students will participate in The Dash on September 10th from 8:30-9:00 a.m. Parents are welcome to attend and cheer on our runners!

To help your child have a successful and comfortable day, please make sure they:

  • Wear school colors (red, white, and/or blue)
  • Wear comfortable running shoes
  • Bring a water bottle
  • Bring a change of clothes
  • Apply sunscreen before coming to school

Geography

One of our Social Studies standards requires students to learn and memorize their home address. We will be practicing this skill in class. Please help your child by filling in their address on the handout in this week's Friday Folder. If your child lives in more than one household, please include each address. Return this form to school by Thursday, September 10.

Math

Last week in math, we worked on building strong number sense by exploring numbers in different ways using special math tools called the number rack and the ten frame. Students practiced recognizing quantities without counting one by one, making combinations of numbers that equal 10, and identifying parts that make 5 and ten. Through hands-on activities, games, and problem-solving, students developed strategies for counting, composing and decomposing numbers, and explaining their mathematical thinking. These foundational skills will support future learning in addition and subtraction while helping students become more confident and flexible mathematicians.

Writing

In writing, we read Ralph Writes a Story and learned how authors often draw ideas from their own experiences. Students used their memories and creativity to write personal narratives about meaningful events in their lives. They planned their stories using the sequence words first, next, then, and last to help organize their ideas. Next, they turned those ideas into complete sentences. We are excited to begin transforming our writing into our very first published books as first graders next week!

Social and Emotional Learning
We have been working with students on Universal Learning and Social Skills, which are foundational behavioral skills that all first graders are encouraged to demonstrate at the beginning of the school year. Using this link, you can view the lesson plans we are implementing in class.

In your child's Friday Folder, you will find a letter that explains the skills we are teaching, along with a checklist you can use to assess your child's progress at home. This is a wonderful opportunity to work together to set goals and build skills for a successful school year.
