What is Happening in FIRST GRADE?

Social Studies

We are learning about our community and where we live. Our overall question is “What makes our location special?” We are looking for small cardboard boxes and containers to help us build 3D communities. Please send these items in with your child, if you have them at home. If you would like to help students build, click here to sign up.

Occupations
As part of our social studies curriculum, we are learning about economics and the many different jobs people do in our community. We would love to learn about the jobs of our families, too! If you would like to participate, we invite you to create a short video, 5 minutes or less, telling us about your job and what you do. As we learn about jobs, we are also discussing how all work is valuable. Some jobs earn money, while others, such as parenting, caregiving, and volunteering, do not. All of these roles are important and help our families and communities thrive. We hope to hear about a wide variety of jobs and roles and can't wait to learn from you! Your child's teacher will email you a Seesaw link that you can use to record your video.

Math

This week first graders used dominoes to strengthen their understanding of addition and subtraction. Students practiced quickly recognizing the number of dots, finding the total, and writing equations to match the dominoes. These hands-on activities help students build number sense and develop fact fluency in a fun and engaging way.

We are still looking for volunteers to help with our Math WIN time. Please sign up here.

Reading
Our current reading unit is My Family, My Community. This week first graders read and discussed stories about families and communities. We focused on the comprehension skill of setting, identifying where and when a story takes place and discussing how the setting helps us understand the story. In grammar, students learned about nouns that name places and things and practiced finding and using these nouns in sentences.

Music Informance

Please check in at the office and head to the Music room if you wish to watch/be apart of the music informance. This is during specials time (12:50-1:35) with Ms. Schlatter.
