What is Happening in FIRST GRADE?

Welcome to Homestead!

Please help us in welcoming our new students. Violet G. is in Mrs. Palumbo's class and Oliver S. is in Mrs. Dattilo's class.

Reading, Science and Writing

We are learning about animals and their super powers. In science students will explore the traits of adult and baby animals. They make observations of parent animals and their offspring, determining how they are similar and different. They explore behaviors that help offspring survive. Students also investigate how the traits of animals are essential for their growth and survival. In reading we are answering the questions of how do animals' bodies help them survive? We will be reading fiction and nonfiction texts as we explore this guiding question. In writing, students have chosen an animal that lives in Colorado to research. We use the online program PebbleGo for research and students are writing a report about their animal focusing on it's unique super powers that help it survive.

Thank You!

We are so grateful to everyone who helped with our cardboard community. The students did a great job creating buildings that fit into the categories of Goods, Services and Neighborhood. If you did not get a chance to see it in person you can watch the video linked here.

Fundations

We are working on Unit 3 in Fundations which focused on consonant digraphs. These are 2 letters that work together to make one sound: wh, th, ch, sh, and ck. Students learn that ck is only at the end of a short work next to a short vowel. You will find more information on the sheet in your child's Friday Folder.

Pumpkin Day and Garden Experience

On October 23rd First Grade will explore the garden and investigate pumpkins through measurement and data collection. We would love parent volunteers to help with both hands on activities. You will be in charge of a small group of students. The Garden experience will be outside during your child's class time (Volunteers will arrive 10 minutes early):

8:10-8:40 Palumbo

8:40-9:10-Dattilo

9:10-9:40-Moore

The Pumpkin math investigation and data collection will take place from 11:40-1:00. We are asking for the donation of 12 large pumpkins.
